Jadeite dates back as far as ancient Mesoamerica, however, its sources were lost for 5 centuries and rediscovered less than 50 years ago.
Mayans adorned themselves with Jadeite because it was the color green- their most precious color. It symbolized the color of the water in the cenotes (underwater cave systems). Green also symbolized crops and fertility. They carved Jadeite into burial masks, rings, ear flares, necklaces, and other ceremonial objects.
